Women’s Basketball Falls at #11/12 Kansas State

Houston continues action at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at #6/9 Baylor
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program was overpowered by #11/12 Kansas State, 72-38, at Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
In her eighth-straight game scoring in double figures, senior guard Laila Blair led Houston (9-4, 0-2 Big 12) with 17 points while Kansas State's (14-1, 2-0 Big 12) senior center Ayoka Lee posted a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
What started as an early back-and-forth battle in the first half escaped from the Cougars' grasp as the Wildcats opened the third quarter on a 20-1 run. Houston was held to 14 points in the second half.
The Cougars opened the game on a 5-0 run as Blair started the night with a 3-pointer, followed by a layup. Houston's defense held Kansas State scoreless until the 6:33 mark as senior guard Gabby Gregory ended the drought with a three-pointer. The Cougars finished the first quarter tied at 13.
Kansas State quickly started things off in the second quarter with an 8-0 run while Blair ended the Wildcats' hot start with a 3-pointer to reach double figures. After both teams exchanged points, Kansas State entered the locker room with a five-point lead.
Despite only trailing by two points early in the third quarter, Lee added 11 of her 27 points in the third frame run to push Kansas State to a double-digit lead that it would never relinquish.

Houston continues its road swing in Waco, Texas, to battle #6/9 Baylor at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at Foster Pavilion.
The Cougars will return to the friendly confines of Fertitta Center for a two-game homestand as they take on BYU at 7 p.m., Wednesday for First Responders Day, followed by 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13 matchup against #23 TCU.
