
Men Win Opener, Meyer Wins Individual Title

Seniors Seagreaves, Cox lead men to Early Bird Opener win, Meyer wins women’s race
BEAUMONT, Texas – Led by seniors Brandon Seagreaves and Branch Cox, the Houston cross country team started off 2023 with a meet win at Lamar's Early Bird Opener on Friday night while senior Claire Meyer won the women's race.
Seagreaves and Cox, who finished second and third overall, respectively, led a Cougar quintet of four athletes in the top 10 and five finishers inside the top 11. Seagreaves' time of 17:44.27 over the six kilometer course topped his teammate Cox by just under two seconds.
Seagreaves and Cox were followed by sophomore Miles Cox (fifth overall) who finished in 17:57.69, freshman Derek Waite (10th) who finished his first collegiate race in 18:15.50 and graduate Brycen Pitre (11th) who crossed as Houston's fifth scoring athlete in 18:20.66.
On the women's side, Claire Meyer won the individual four-kilometer race in 13:30.36, over 15 seconds faster than the runner-up competitor. Meyer was followed by junior Zosia Bulhak who finished fourth overall in 14:02.77 as the Houston women finished second as a team.
Juniors Eleni Kaiser (13th overall), Erin Rivera (15th overall) and freshman Carly Ahrens (17th overall) rounded out Houston's scoring five.
"Today was a great day for the cross country program," Director of Cross Country Will Blackburn said. "To be able to start the season off with Claire winning her first collegiate meet and the men winning tonight sets the tone for the upcoming season. I would like to congratulate Coach Gibson for his first team and individual win in his his first meet coaching the Cougars."
