
Wochner Leads Men’s Golf on Monday

Junior transfer tied for 15th after first day of Valspar Collegiate Classic
PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston junior Marcus Wochner stood in a tie for 15th after posting a pair of sub-par rounds on the first day of the Valspar Collegiate Classic at The Floridian Golf Club on Monday evening.
Wochner opened the tournament with a 3-under 68 and followed with a 70 in the afternoon to join five others in a tie for 15th at 4-under 138 on the 6,921-yard, par-71 layout.
The day did not begin well for Wochner after he bogeyed his first hole on No. 2. Fortunately, the Holte, Denmark, native quickly returned to even park with a birdie on No. 5 and moved into red numbers with an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
After seven straight pars, Wochner moved to 3-under with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole. Despite a bogey on No. 18, Wochner regained the stroke with a birdie on his final hole of the first round to finish at 68.
In the afternoon, Wochner drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 and moved to 3-under in the afternoon with his final birdie of the day on No. 10 before finishing with a 70.
The tournament annually features many of the nation's top collegiate programs. This year's field includes 10 of the country's Top 35 with four of the Top 10 and seven of the Top 25.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 3-under 568 and were tied for ninth with Clemson.
No. 10 Pepperdine held the first-day lead at 540 to finish 14 strokes ahead of No. 6 Arizona State. No. 4 North Carolina (556), No. 26 Florida State (559). No. 20 Wake Forest (561), Duke (561), No. 33 Ohio State (561) and No. 5 Texas Tech (564) rounded out the Top-Eight leaders.
Senior Braxton Waktins was tied for 30th at even-par 142, while senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 41st at 144. Senior Alexander Frances was tied for 46th at 145, while junior Austyn Reily was teid for 49th at 146.
Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Jacob Borow was tied for 58th at 148.
Pepperdine's Dylane Menante stood atop the individual leaderboard at 13-under 12 to finish one stroke head of Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman. Duke's Ian Siebers, Pepperdine's Joe Highsmith, North Carolina's Ryan Burnett and USC's Jackson Rivera were tied for third at 134.
The Final Round begins with a 7:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start on Tuesday. The event is free and open to the public, which is invited to attend.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Duke and Texas Tech, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday.
Watkins will compete in the first group off No. 8 with Wochner (second group off No. 8), Gibson (No. 9), Reily (first group off No. 10) and Frances (second group off No. 10) following. Borow will tee off in the second group off No. 18.

Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars will tee off at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas, on April 9-10.
From there, the Cougars will send individual student-athletes to compete at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic. That tournament will be held at Walden Golf Club on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas, on April 11-12.
The Cougars then take their first step in the postseason when they tee off at the American Athletic Conference Championships on April 22-24 at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, Fla. The winner of the league' annual postseason tournament receives an automatic bid to NCAA Regional play, set for May 16-18 at one of six sites across the nation.
