Chi Chun Chen Leads Men’s Golf in NCAA Bermuda Run Regional

Junior posts 2-under 69 at Bermuda Run Country Club to lead Coogs and tie for 12th after First Round
BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – University of Houston Men's Golf junior Chi Chun Chen posted a 2-under 69 during the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional to lead the Cougars and tie for 12th after the First Round on Monday afternoon.
Starting off No. 10 on the 7,013-yard, par-71 course layout at Bermuda Run Country Club, Chen made seven straight pars before making his first birdie of the day on the par-15 17th hole.
Following three more pars, the Taiwan native buried three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-6 before running into trouble with back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 7-8.
Junior Grant Doggett tied with Chen for the team lead with four birdies himself and finished the First Round in a tie for 28th at 71. Senior Hudson Weibel was tied for 50th 73 while sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen was tied for 59th at 74. Senior Bryant Hiskey II was tied for 66th at 76.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 287 and were tied with NC State for ninth.
#3 (1 seed) Virginia held the First-Round team lead at 271 to stand two shots ahead of #15 (3) Pepperdine. Host and 32nd-ranked (6)Wake Forest, #10 (2) Mississippi, #39 (7) Mississippi State and #28 (5) USC were tied for third at 278 with #22 (4) Georgia Tech (283) completing the Top 10.
The tournament continues with the Second Round beginning at 6:30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday and the Final Round teeing off Wednesday.
The Top-Five teams from each NCAA Regional and the top individual not on a qualifying team advance to play at the NCAA Championships, set for May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Cougars are competing in NCAA Regional play for the sixth straight season and the 12th time during Mike Booker Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke's 17-year career at Houston.

Hiskey begins the day off No. 1 at 7:25 a.m. (CDT) with Hsuan-Yi Chen (7:36 a.m. CDT), Weibel (7:47 a.m. CDT), Doggett (7:58 a.m. CDT) and Chi Chun Chen (8:09 a.m.) following.

HOUSTON in NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
Houston will compete in NCAA Regional play for the sixth consecutive season and the 26th time in school history.
A year ago, the Cougars finished seventh at the NCAA Urbana Regional at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Ill. Wolfgang Glawe fired 69s in each of the final two rounds to finish 17th and lead the Cougars.
During its history, the Cougars have earned eight Top-Five team finishes in NCAA Regional play and captured the 1998 NCAA Central Regional title at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Four Cougars – Michael Perras, Blair Hamilton, Brett Callas and Dean Larsson – have earned medalist honors in NCAA Regional Play – while 14 Cougars have enjoyed Top-10 individual showings.
