Coogs rally in Final Round to finish sixth as team; Three Cougars shoot 66 in team record-low round in NCAA Regional play
BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program saved its best for last to surge into sixth place during the Final Round of the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional at Bermuda Run Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars posted a team score of 15-under 269 Wednesday and finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a total of 18-under 834 on the 7,013-yard, par-71 layout. It was the third straight season in which Houston finished among the Top-Seven leaders as a team in NCAA Regional play.
With its Final Round mark, Houston set a school record for low round in an NCAA Regional, topping the previous best of 272 during the Final Round of the NCAA Franklin Regional at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., on May 18, 2016.
Junior Chi Chun Chen, senior Hudson Weibel and sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen each fired 66s Wednesday with junior Grant Doggett joining them as the fourth Cougar to shoot par or lower. It was the first time that Houston had three student-athletes with rounds of 66 or lower in one round in NCAA Regional history.
Houston moved to within four strokes of fifth place midway through the second nine. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the team would move for the rest of the day.
The Top-Five teams from each NCAA Regional and the top individual not on a qualifying team advanced to the NCAA Championships, set for May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Weibel used a fast start in his final round to make his move in the standings. The Dallas native opened the day with a birdie at No. 1 and rebounded from a bogey at the par-3 third hole to make birdies on four of his next six holes to cap his first nine.
Weibel added two more birdies on his second nine and tied for 14th at 6-under 207.
Making his NCAA postseason debut, sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen made the biggest rise in the individual standings, moving up 19 places to tie for 25th at 3-under 210.
