Men’s Golf Rises at NCAA Bermuda Run Regional

Senior Hudson Weibel leads four Cougars at par or lower in Tuesday’s Second Round; Final Round tees off Wednesday morning

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program bettered its First-Round scored by nine strokes to rise into eighth following the Second Round of the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional on Tuesday afternoon.
After opening the NCAA postseason with a score of 287 on the 7,013-yard, par-71 course at Bermuda Run Country Club on Monday, the Cougars posted a total of 6-under 284 in the Second Round and surged into eighth with a two-day total of 3-under 565.
Four Cougars shot par or lower in the Second Round with senior Hudson Weibel's 3-under 68 leading the way. Junior Grant Doggett added a 69, sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen finished with a 70 and junior Chi Chun Chen added an even-par 71.
Weibel began his Second Round with a birdie on the first hole and moved to 3-under with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7.
The Dallas native ran into trouble with a bogey to close his first nine and endured another bogey at No. 12 but rebounded with two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 15-17 to rise 25 places into a tie for 25th at 1-under 141.
After three straight pars to open his round, Doggett chipped in for an eagle-3 on No. 4 and added a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole. Following bogeys at No. 8 and No. 11, the Beach City, Texas, native drained a birdie on the par-5 17th hole to finish with a 69 and move into a tie for 18th with Chi Chun Chen at 2-under 140.
Hsuan-Yi Chen led the Cougars with six birdies in his Second Round and rose 15 places into a tie for 44th at 144. Senior Bryant Hiskey was tied for 67th at 153.
#3 (1 seed) Virginia held the First-Round team lead at 541 to stand six shots ahead of #15 (3) Pepperdine and #10 (2) Mississippi. #39 (7) Mississippi State stood in fourth at 550 while #28 (5) USC was in fifth at 577 with (9) NC State (562), #32 (6) Wake Forest (564) (10) Kentucky (570) and (10) Richmond (573) completing the Top 10.
Individually, Virginia's Ben James stood atop the leaderboard at 13-under 129 to finish three strokes ahead of Pepperdine's Mahanth Chirravuri and Mississippi's Cameron Tankersley. Mississippi State's Garrett Endicott was in fourth at 133 with Kentucky's Jacob Lang in fifth at 134.
Lang was the top individual not on a Top-Five team following the Second Round.
The tournament concludes with the Final Round beginning at 6:30 a.m. (CDT) Wednesday.
The Top-Five teams from each NCAA Regional and the top individual not on a qualifying team advance to play at the NCAA Championships, set for May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Cougars are competing in NCAA Regional play for the sixth straight season and the 12th time during Mike Booker Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke's 17-year career at Houston.

HOUSTON in NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
Houston will compete in NCAA Regional play for the sixth consecutive season and the 26th time in school history.
A year ago, the Cougars finished seventh at the NCAA Urbana Regional at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Ill. Wolfgang Glawe fired 69s in each of the final two rounds to finish 17th and lead the Cougars.
During its history, the Cougars have earned eight Top-Five team finishes in NCAA Regional play and captured the 1998 NCAA Central Regional title at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Four Cougars – Michael Perras, Blair Hamilton, Brett Callas and Dean Larsson – have earned medalist honors in NCAA Regional Play – while 14 Cougars have enjoyed Top-10 individual showings.
