Carden three-hit day, Todd shutout boost Cougars past .500
HOUSTON -- Late game heroics by right fielder Amanda Carden's walk-off base hit earned Houston a doubleheader sweep at home against Sam Houston on Tuesday 3-2 after beating the Bearkats 1-0 in the first game.
Game 1
Houston (16-15) got on the scoreboard early and rode a stellar pitching day as the Cougars bagged a narrow 1-0 shutout victory in their first of two games against Sam Houston (9-20).
Right-handed pitcher Hannah Todd held it down in the circle and tossed 7.0 innings with three strikeouts while limiting the Bearkats to three hits for her fourth win, second complete game and first shutout of the year.
The Cougars loaded the bases early and opened their account after right fielder Amanda Carden reached home plate on a fielder's choice to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
A quiet game for bats kept both teams in a one-run game deep into the late innings. Despite four errors in the infield in the first five innings, Todd handled the Bearkats to keep a clean slate with no hits in the final three innings while leaving nine runners stranded throughout the game.
The win marks Houston's first of the season when scoring two runs or less, UH's third shutout of the season and its fifth game of the season allowing three hits or less. The Cougars allowed three or less hits for the fifth time this season, now improving to 5-0 in such games.
Game 2
A late surge for a Sam Houston comeback was crossed out by a Carden base hit in the bottom of the seventh to deliver a Houston walk-off 3-2 victory and complete Tuesday's sweep.
Right-handed pitcher Hannah Blincoe made her first collegiate start and sixth appearance on the season, as she tossed a career-high 5.2 innings along with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Cougars (16-15) struck first in the first inning as catcher Kati Ray Brown slammed a solo shot for her fourth home run of the season to hand Houston a 1-0 lead early.
Four scoreless frames between the second and fifth innings unraveled in the top of the sixth as Sam Houston (9-21) found the scoreboard for the first time on the day to lead 2-1. Right-hander Megan Lee stepped in on a pitching change and picked up the third out to send the game to the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, a lead-off single by shortstop Rock Benavides sparked the late-game comeback for the Cougars. Following a walk to designated player Katy Repa, Carden's bat answered the call for a walk-off base hit to propel the Cougars 16th win and boost them above .500 on the season.
Lee finished the game with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and one strikeout in the process while Carden capped off a three-hit day with two in the latter game for a career-long six-game hitting streak.
