All-AAC honoree and UCONN standout joins Cougar Softball as an assistant coach
HOUSTON – Former University of Connecticut standout Lexi Gifford joined the University of Houston Softball team as an assistant coach, Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker announced Wednesday.
"We are thrilled to Welcome Lexi to Houston and look forward to seeing the impact she makes on our program," Schoonmaker said. "Just over 10 years ago, I had the privilege of being one of Lexi's coaches while she was a standout shortstop at the collegiate level. She was a hard-nosed player with an unmatched competitive energy and a work ethic that has positioned her to take a role like this.
Â
Our student-athletes will love being coached by her and will benefit from the experience she adds. Her competitive fire is a joy to be around, and I look forward to seeing her make an immediate impact on our student-athletes and softball program."
Â
Gifford comes to Houston after a season at Boston College where she served as the Director of Operations and Player Development before being promoted to an assistant coach.
Â
From 2017-2025, Gifford served as the Director of Instruction and team travel director at Frozen Ropes facility where she oversaw facility instructors and team travel. She also led private lessons and group classes while managing the day-to-day operations.
Â
A four-year starter at UCONN, Gifford was a mainstay at shortstop for the Huskies, breaking the Big East single season assist record as a freshman.
Â
While at UCONN, Gifford earned Big East All-Conference Academic honors in 2013 before being named to the All-AAC Second Team in 2016.
Â
In 2016, Gifford slashed .316/.389/.439 as a senior while recording 49 hits, 26 RBI and four home runs.
Â
Gifford set the program record for career defensive assists with 518 and sits Top 20 at UCONN in games played, runs scored, doubles and walks.
