HARTFORD, Wis. – University of Houston senior Alexander Frances overcame an early bogey to shoot a 5-under 67 with eight birdies during Monday's Second Round at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,344-yard, par-72 layout at Erin Hills Golf Course, Frances endured the first of two bogeys on the day on No. 4. That started an amazing streak of five consecutive birdies to cap his front nine.
Enduring his final bogey of the day on No. 10, the Stege, Denmark, native proceeded to make birdie on three of his next four holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 13-14.
The 2021 All-American Athletic Conference performer rose 30 spots in the individual standings into a tie for 24th at 3-under 141.
Making his collegiate debut this week, redshirt freshman Jacob Borow posted an even-par 72 on Tuesday, thanks to an eagle on his first hole of the day. The Lake Jackson, Texas, native was tied for 47th at 145.
Junior Austyn Reily was tied for 62nd at 147, while senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 76th at 149. Junior transfer Marcus Wochner stood in 88th at 153.
As a team, the Cougars stood in 16th at 581. South Florida moved into the team lead at 28-under 548 to finish the second day three shots ahead of Texas A&M. Purdue was in third at 553, while Kansas (560) and Liberty (560) were tied for fourth at 560.
Northwestern (564), Iowa (564) Northern Illinois (568), Ohio State (569) and East Tennessee State (570) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Texas A&M's Walker Lee held the Second-Round lead at 11-under 133 to stand two shots ahead of Iowa's Gonzalo Leal and East Tennessee State's Mats Ege. South Florida's Albin Bergstrom stood in fourth at 135.
WASHINGTON COUNTY INVITATIONAL
Senior Braxton Watkins, redshirt freshman Drew Murdock and freshman Julio Rios-Brache finished play as individuals at the Washington County Individual at Washington County Golf Course on Monday afternoon.
Watkins posted a 1-under 71 on the 7,048-yard, par-72 layout to finish 21st at even-par 144. The Texarkana, Ark., native overcame a bogey at No. 15 to start the day and returned to even par with a birdie on the par-5 17th.
After another bogey at No. 1, Watkins drained a pair of birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 3-5 and added his final birdie of the day on the par-5 seventh hole.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Julio Rios-Brache fired the Cougars' low round among their individuals with a 3-under 69, thanks to a bogey-free day. Starting off No. 12, the Santo Domingo, P.R., native posted nine straight pars before making his first birdie of the day on the par-5 third hole.
Rios Brache added two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 6-8 and closed out the tournament with three straight pars to tie for 27th at 147.
