Cougars appearance in first AAC conference tournament in 2019
HOUSTON – After spending more than entire calendar year off the field, the University of Houston Soccer program opens its season when the Cougars face Rice at 2 p.m., Saturday for an exhibition contest.
Â
Despite the decision made to postpone the fall season, the Cougars are ready to build off of year's historic season, which saw Houston make its first conference tournament appearance in program history.
Â
Houston enters the season with young talent who will look up to the leadership of its veterans like senior forward Jazmin Grant, who was named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team. Grant received the accolade for the second time in her career after finishing second in program history for most shots in a single season with 35 in 2019.
Â
The Cougars' newcomers will also see the return of sophomore midfielder Madison Gear and junior forward Kayla Izaguirre. While Gear was the 2019 Houston Soccer Newcomer of the Year honoree, Izaguirre earned Most Improved Player honors.
Â
Both Gear and Izaguirre made 18 appearances in 2019 and combined to make eight starts. Gear notched two goals on 12 shots, and Izaguirre recorded six shots in 706 minutes of play.
