Houston Heads to Alabama For Weekend Clash

Cougars set to face Crimson Tide on SECN+
HOUSTON – Fresh off a season opening victory at Oklahoma, the University of Houston Women's Basketball team continues its road swing with a Sunday afternoon meeting with Alabama. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. inside Coleman Coliseum.

THE 4-1-1
Houston continues its two-game road swing in Tuscaloosa against Alabama on Nov. 29 at 2. p.m. on SECN+. Britney Onyeje had a breakout game against Oklahoma, posting a team-high 23 points in her collegiate debut. Julia Blackshell-Fair nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Dymond Gladney remains a consistent leader for the Cougars, with seven assists in the contest.
Houston scored 97 points on 43.6 percent shooting from the field and a 31.1 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line against OU. The Cougars allowed 85 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 41.7 percent and 20.0 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Blackshell-Fair paced Houston on the glass, pulling down 9.0 rebounds per contest. Houston grabbed 41 rebounds against OU. The defense forced 21 Oklahoma turnovers. Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game ranked 56th nationally in blocks (3) 24th in steals (12) and 31st in forced turnovers (21).
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE
Alabama is in its eighth season under Head Coach Kristy Curry. Last season 'Bama finished 18-12 overall and 8-8 in the SEC.
Alabama is led in scoring and rebounding by Preseason All-SEC selection, Jasmine Walker who posted 22 points and seven rebounds in UA's win over Samford. Jordan Lewis led the team with six assists. Alabama enters the game with an NCAA-leading seven turnovers after defeating Samford in its season-opener, 83-68.
THE SERIES
Sunday's meeting is the 6th meeting between the two teams. The series is tied, 3-3 with Houston dropping the last two. This will be the first time the two squads have met since 2013.
STELLAR DEBUTS
Seven players made their Cougars debuts against Oklahoma, helping the Cougars score its most points since 2013. Britney Onyeje introduced herself to Cougar fans in an emphatic fashion, dropping a career-high 23 points, including five made three-pointers. Freshman Laila Blair made her collegiate debut, posting 13 points, including five in the fourth quarter, and grabbed two rebounds. Eryka Sidney played minutes for the UH, knocking down a go-ahead jumper right before halftime. Ca'Leyah Burrell went a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point land, as UH made 10 three-pointers in its season opener. Daphane White helped the Cougars in the front court, pulling down five rebounds.
BALL CONTROL
The Cougars recorded 100 possessions against OU, committed just 12 turnovers. The UH guards rank among the best in the nation in assist-turnover ratio at 1.42, which is 15th nationally.
SCOOP 'N SCORE
Houston forced 21 Oklahoma turnovers, its most since Feb. 18, 2020 when the team forced 23 against Cincinnati. UH scored 23 points off turnovers against the Sooners.
CLOCKS TICKING
During the 2019-20 season Houston guards Dymond Gladney and Julia Blackshell-Fair were among the top-three in the league in minutes played. With added depth, the Cougars now have options off the bench.
SEC TIES
Assistant Coach LaSondra Barrett was the 2009 SEC Freshman of the Year and two-time All-SEC selection. In her time at LSU she never lost a game to Alabama.
THE WAIT IS OVER
Houston saw an influx of transfer last season. Britney Onyeje, Eryka Sidney, Paris Netherly and Miya Crump will finally get to don the Red and White during the 2020-21 season. Crump joins the Cougars from Lamar where she was named the Southland Newcomer of the Year in 2018. Paris Netherly returns to her homes state after a season at FIU. Eryka Sidney brings a wealth of knowledge to the squad after spending two seasons at San Jacinto CC and a year at Texas Tech. Britney Onyeje returns to Texas after spending her freshman season with conference foe UCF.
