Houston Outlasted by Alabama

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team fell short in Tuscaloosa, falling to Alabama in an 88-66 decision on Sunday afternoon.
Houston was led in scoring by Julia Blackshell-Fair and Britney Onyeje with 12 points each. Blackshell-Fair dished a team-high six assists, as Onyeje pulled down eight rebounds.
Houston's bench outscored the Crimson Tide reserves 37-15, as UH shot 36.1 percent from the field to Alabama's 43.1 percent. Alabama shot 18 more free throws than Houston, hitting 84.2 percent of its shots from the charity stripe.
The Crimson Tide had three players score in double figures, led by Jasmine Walker with 25 points.
The Houston post-players anchored the offense for much of the first quarter, as sophomore forward Jazmaine Lewis dropped six of her career-high eight points in the first ten minutes of play. Early fouls plague the Cougars as Alabama hit five of its six free throw attempts to take a 14-13 lead at the break.
The Cougars got going from behind the three-point line in the second quarter, knocking down three shots from long-range. UH took its first lead of the game with 7:36 left in the frame behind a three-pointer from Senior Eryka Sidney. The Cougars took control of the glass, grabbing four more offensive boards than the Crimson Tide, but fouls would make all the difference. Alabama remained strong at the charity stripe, hitting seven of its eight shots to take a 37-31 lead at the half.
Houston showed up big in the early minutes of the third quarter, opening the frame on a 9-2 scoring run to get within two points. The Cougars capitalized on their size, outscoring Alabama 14-10 in the paint, but missed second-chance opportunities and fouls pushed the Crimson Tide's lead to nine points as both teams headed to the fourth quarter.
Blackshell-Fair paced UH in the fourth quarter, scoring five of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. She was assisted by Onyeje who knocked down two of her four three-pointers in the final frame. Alabama would ultimately outlast the Cougars in an 88-66 decision.
