HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got out to fast starts, but it was Houston who took control of things in the opening minutes of play at the Fertitta Center. Tallying 22 first quarter points on 52.9 percent shooting from the field, to go along with seven forced turnovers in the opening ten minutes of action, the Cougars set the tone early. Six players would score in the first quarter to give Houston a 22-18 lead at the break.
A scoring drought would plague the Cougars in the second quarter, as Memphis hit 60 percent of its shots from the field. Defense would keep things close as Houston proved to be unstoppable in the second frame, forcing nine Memphis turnovers and scoring six points off of turnovers. The Cougars would head into the break with a 39-33 lead, 16 forced turnovers and outscoring Memphis 24-16 in the paint.
With a team-high 12 points entering the third quarter, Dymond Gladney would continue to anchor the Cougars on both ends of the floor. Gladney would find Tatyana Hill on multiple occasions in the third quarter as Houston continued to make things difficult for Memphis in the post. Hill closed out the frame with six of her 14 points as Julia Blackshell-Fair and Gladney combined for five assists.
Memphis would manage to get within four points before Dorian Branch and Gladney would knock down back-to-back three-pointers to ignite the Cougars offense one last time in the fourth quarter. The Cougars would go 6-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch, extending its lead and clinching its first win of 2020 to improve to 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play.
