DALLAS – University of Houston senior Matt Cole fired a 6-under 65, and all five Cougars posted even par or better during the Second Round of the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars posted a team score of 11-under 273 Monday to move into third with a total of 557 after 36 holes. Host SMU and Arizona State were tied for the team lead at 547, while UC Davis (562), Little Rock (563) and Rice (563) followed the Cougars.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,486-yard, par-72 course, Cole alternated birdies and pars on his first six holes. Following six straight pars, he added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15 to move into a tie for 16th at 2-under 140.
Cole became the 19th player in school history to shoot 65 or better in a round and the first since Matt Williams fired a 64 in the Second Round at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Sept. 22, 2018.
Cole was only part of a Houston team effort, which produced 23 birdies and an eagle during the day.
Junior Andrew Gibson continued to lead the Cougars and was tied for fourth with a score of 5-under 137 after shooting 69 Monday. The Perthshire, Scotland, native drained three birdies on his first five holes and overcame a bogey on No. 7 with his fourth birdie on the front nine at No 7.
Gibson added additional birdies on No. 10 and No. 15
Junior Alexander Frances started the day with an eagle on the 550-yard, par-5 first hole and added two more birdies in his round on the way to a 71. The Stege, Denmark, native was tied for 16th at 140.
Junior Luke Long sank five birdies during the final seven holes of his front nine and added another birdie on the 630-yard, par-5 14th hole to finish with a 69 and moved into a tie for 21st at 141.
Senior Logan Young drained three birdies on his first seven holes and finished with a 70 to tie for 58th at 146.
The three-day, 54-hole event continues with an 8 a.m., split-tee start Tuesday.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Arizona State and SMU.
Young starts the day at 8:45 a.m., Tuesday, off No. 1, with Long (8:54 a.m.), Frances (9:03 a.m.), Cole (9:12 a.m.) and Gibson (9:21 a.m.) following.

UP NEXT
Following the Trinity Forest Invitational, the Cougars will take a break from their schedule before returning to action at the Intercollegiate on Oct. 28-29 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
That tournament will be held on the same course as the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships in late April.
