Cougars Run Away with First Road Win at UIW

Jasmyne Harris scores season-high 27 points in victory over Cardinals
SAN ANTONIO – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team picked up its first road win of the 2018-19 season with a 79-60 victory over Incarnate Word inside the McDermott Center on Friday.
Houston found the lead on its first possession of the game, on a 3-pointer from Jasmyne Harris and held an early 5-2 lead with 8:54 remaining in the first. However Incarnate Word would hold the Cougars scoreless over the next four minutes, while claiming its first lead of the game at, 7-5.
After Harris finally broke the drought with a free throw at the 4:52 mark, the Cougars responded with seven-straight points to reclaim the lead. Following Harris' make from the charity stripe, Alyssa Okoene added a pair of baskets, while Julia Blackshell-Fair scored her first bucket of the game to give Houston a 12-7 advantage.
The two teams would trade the lead twice more in the quarter before Dorian Branch landed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Houston a 19-18 lead after one. The Cougars shot 44.4 percent (8-18) from the field in the first quarter.
Branch opened the scoring with another triple in the second quarter to push the lead to 22-18, but UIW answered with the next six points to grab a 24-22 advantage. Houston's defense would clamp down over the remainder of the frame however, holding the Cardinals to just 10 points the rest of the way.
On offense, the Cougars closed the quarter on a 13-6 run to grab the lead back at the half. After another Branch 3-pointer gave the Cougars the lead at 27-26, freshman Tatyana Hill rattled off the next five on a pair of free throws and an old-fashioned 3-point play. The teams would trade scores over the waning moments of the quarter before Harris beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to give Houston a 37-32 cushion at the intermission.
Houston's defense held Incarnate Word to just 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from the field including a 1-of-5 (20.0 percent) mark from beyond the 3-point line in the second quarter.
Harris took over in the third quarter, scoring 12 of Houston's 20 points in the frame. The Cougars grabbed a nine-point lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from Octavia Barnes and Dymond Gladney, Gladney's first career score. However, Incarnate Word would answer with back-to-back triples of their own to pull back within three.
From there, Harris would score 12 of the next 14 points, including a triple on the next possession. After a Blackshell-Fair layup pushed the lead to eight, Harris outscored the Cardinals 9-7 over the remainder of the quarter to give Houston a 57-47 lead after three quarters.
Houston blew the game open in the fourth quarter, opening the period on a 10-2 run over the first few minutes. Hill began the quarter with an old-fashioned 3-point play before A pair of free throws from Blackshell-Fair and two-straight buckets from Doris Jones pushed the advantage to 67-49.
A 10-3 run would follow Incarnate Word's second bucket of the fourth quarter. Blackshell-Fair opened the spurt with a bucket before Harris and Serithia Hawkins knocked down a pair of free throws each and Branch added her fourth bucket of the game to push the lead to the largest of the night at 77-55.
The Cougars shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field in the final quarter, while holding Incarnate Word to 23.5 percent (4-of-17) over the final 10 minutes to take the contest 79-60.
