
Houston Comeback Bid Falls Shy at Home

Cougars fall, 64-57, to Boston College despite double-double from Serithia Hawkins
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team saw their comeback bid fall just shy in a 64-57 loss against Boston College on Sunday, inside H&PE Arena.
Boston College raced out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes after a 3-pointer from Marnelle Garraud and buckets from Emma Guy and Georgia Pineau. The Cougars would respond however, with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game. Jasmyne Harris knocked down a free throw to start the spurt before back-to-back buckets in the paint from Serithia Hawkins drew the game even.
The Eagles would again take the lead on the next possession with another 3-pointer from Garraud before Guy would push the lead back to four following a Jasmyne Harris free throw. Down the stretch however, the Cougars were able to close the gap with a free throw from Angela Harris and another layup from Hawkins to bring the score to 12-11 after 10 minutes of play.
Neither team could find a rhythm offensively in the first quarter, where Boston College shot 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from the field and the Cougars made just 28.6 percent (4-of-14) of their baskets.
The two squads traded buckets for the first three minutes of the second quarter before Boston College built a seven-point lead at 22-15 with 6:08 to play. The Cougars followed with a 5-0 run on a 3-pointer from Jasmyne Harris and a jumper from Octavia Barnes, and after a Guy layup, cut the lead to two again on a Jasmyne Harris jumper with 3:57 to play in the half.
Following Harris' jumper however, the Eagles would break out on a 9-0 run to take a 33-22 advantage in the waning minutes of the half. The Cougars would find an answer however with a 3-pointer from Angela Harris to cut the lead back to eight at the half.
Boston College pulled down seven offensive boards in the second quarter, which resulted in a 13-3 advantage on second-chance points in the frame to build their lead.
The Eagles kept the momentum going into the third quarter, scoring the period's first four points, but the Cougars would find a spark that would carry through the rest of the quarter. Trailing 37-25, Hawkins got to the rim and laid it in to open a 14-0 run for the Cougars. Angela Harris would follow with a layup just over a minute later, before Jasmyne Harris would make back-to-back layups to cut the lead to 37-33 with 5:05 remaining.
After a Boston College turnover, Alyssa Okoene scored in the paint, which the Cougars followed with back-to-back steals, and back-to-back buckets from Jasmyne Harris and Hawkins to take their first lead of the game at, 39-37, with 3:12 to play in the third.
A mini 4-0 run for Boston College gave the Eagles the lead back at 41-39, but Houston scored five of the final eight points in the quarter to tie the score at 44 apiece heading to the final frame. The Cougars shot 47.4 percent from the field in the third quarter, while holding Boston College to just four field goals and 33.3 percent. Houston outscored the Eagles 16-4 in the paint in the quarter.
Boston College grabbed the first two buckets of the fourth quarter on a layup from Taylor Soule and a 3-pointer by Taylor Ortlepp. Houston responded with back-to-back buckets from Hawkins over the next two minutes to pull back within one at 49-48 with 6:58 to play in the game.
After the two teams traded buckets on their next two possessions, Boston College extended their lead to 57-51 following a 7-2 run, which saw Jasmyne Harris foul out in the process. Houston refused to go away however, and on their ensuing possession, Angela Harris connected on a 3-pointer and made 3-of-4 free throws on the following two possessions to pull within one at 57-56 with 3:39 to play.
Boston College's defense would clamp down the rest of the way however, holding the Cougars to just one point over the final 3:39 and outscoring Houston 7-1 over that span to take the contest 64-57.
