CARROLLTON, Texas – University of Houston sophomore Andrew Gibson drained a team-high five birdies on the way to a 71 during Sunday's Second Round at the Maridoe Intercollegiate and was tied for 12th overall at 146.

Competing as an individual on the 7,017-yard, par-70 course at Maridoe Golf Club, Gibson started his day at 3-under through the first nine holes, thanks to back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8-9.

After a tough start to his second nine, the Perthshire, Scotland, native rebounded with two birdies during the final five holes to lead the Cougars.

As a team, the Cougars stood in 10th at 611 through 36 holes. SMU held the second-day lead at 575 with North Texas (585), Texas A&M (588), Coastal Carolina (589), Arkansas State (596), New Mexico (597) North Florida (599), Tennessee (604) and Indiana (606) rounding out the top-nine leaders.

Junior and 2018 All-American Athletic Conference performer Zach Tracy was tied for 14th at 147, while junior newcomer Logan Young was tied for 26th at 150. Sophomore Alexander Frances was tied for 43rd at 154 with senior Matt Williams tied for 66th at 160 and junior George Gardner tied for 74th at 163.

North Texas' Phillip Knowles held the individual lead at even-par 140, while SMU teammates McClure Meissner and Ben Wong were tied for second at 142. Seven golfers were tied for fourth at 144.

FINAL ROUND on MONDAY
Monday's Final Round begins with an 8 a.m., split-tee start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from UTSA and UT Arlington, starting at 9:20 a.m., off No. 10.

Gardner begins the day for the Cougars at 9:20 a.m., Monday, with Williams (9:30 a.m.), Frances (9:40 a.m.), Young (9:50 a.m.) and Tracy (10 a.m.) following.

Gibson starts his Final Round at 8:20 a.m., off No. 1.

UP NEXT
Following the Maridoe Intercollegiate, Houston returns to action when it tees off at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 22-23 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas.

From there, the Cougars close out the fall season at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on the Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club in Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i on Nov. 2-4.

Houston opens the spring season when it plays host to its own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston on Feb. 17-19, 2019.
