PEARLAND, Texas â€" University of Houston junior Papito Gonzalez and redshirt freshman George Gardner each finished the first day at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at 3-under-141 to tie for fourth and lead the Cougars into third place in the team standings.
As a team, the Cougars posted a total of 290 in the morning round and bettered that by four strokes in the afternoon session to stand in third at 576. Kansas held the first-day lead at 563 to stand 11 strokes ahead of Rice. Following Houston, McNeese State (577) and UT Arlington (578) rounded out the top-five leaders.
Competing on the 7,272-yard, par-72 course at Golfcrest Country Club, Gonzalez was steady throughout both rounds Monday. Starting each round on No. 1, the McAllen, Texas, native began each round with a birdie to set the tone.
Gonzalez added two more birdies in his First Round on the way to a 71 and enjoyed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14 in the afternoon session for a 71 to stand among the top-five leaders through 36 holes.
Gardner made his collegiate debut Monday as an individual after sitting out the 2015-16 season as a redshirt. Starting his day on No. 15, the Southlake, Texas, native birdied his first hole but gave it back with a bogey on No. 16.
Fortunately, the Carroll High School product quickly shook that off with three consecutive birdies on No. 17, No. 18 and No 1. After nine straight pars, Gardner sank another birdie on No. 11 and capped his round with his sixth and final birdie of the day on No. 15 for a 4-under 68.
In the Second Round, Gardner started with a bogey on No. 15 but moved back to even par with a birdie on No. 18 and followed that with his second straight birdie on No. 1. His next 10 holes proved to be a bit of a roller coaster with three birdies, five bogeys and two pars, but Gardner settled down to make par on his final three holes of the day.
Competing as individuals, senior Emmett Oh and redshirt freshman Zach Tracy were each tied for eighth at 142. Oh opened the tournament with a 69 in the First Round. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native started on No. 17 with a birdie and quickly followed with an eagle on the 539-yard, par-3 first hole.
Although Oh hit a stretch where he bogeyed three of four holes, he rebounded nicely with five pars and three birdies, including two of his final three holes of the First Round.
Oh overcame a double bogey 6 on his second hole in the afternoon round and drained birdies on three of his final seven bogey-less holes for a 142.
Like Gardner, Tracy made his collegiate debut Monday. Starting with a bogey on No. 18, the Houston native rallied with four birdies in his next seven holes and capped his First Round with another birdie on No. 17 for an impressive 70.
Tracy, who prepped at Seven Lakes High School, enjoyed another fast start in the Second Round as he birdied three of his first four holes. After a tough stretch that saw him bogey four of five holes at one point, he rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9-10 and finished the day with par on five of his last six holes.
Junior and 2016 All-American Athletic Conference honoree Michael Perras posted 72-71 Monday to stand in a tie for 15th at 143. Senior and defending Bayou City Collegiate Classic individual champion Matt Dunn was tied for 20th at 144 after shooting a 71 in the afternoon round.
Making his collegiate debut as a true freshman, Pryce Beshoory was tied for 27th at 146, while sophomore Jacob Veerman was tied for 35th at 147. Fellow true freshman Tony Gil was tied for 67th at 152 with senior Matt Scobie tied for 72nd at 154.
Junior Alan De Bondt was tied for 45th at 148 while junior Logan Davis was tied for 55th at 150.
Lamar's Mans Berglund and Kansas' Charlie Hillier were tied for the individual lead at 7-under 137. UTSA's Sean Meehan stood in third at 141, while Gonzalez and Gardner were joined by Rice Mitchell Meissner and UT Arlington's Aaron Guanlao at 141.
