HOUSTON - After earning his first collegiate individual title and leading the Cougars to a second-place team finish, University of Houston junior Blair Hamilton was honored Thursday as the American Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week.
Hamilton was the Cougars' steadiest performer at the Border Olympics last week in Laredo, Texas. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native fired three straight sub-par rounds for only the second time in his career, including a 67-69 in the first two rounds, on the way to the first individual title of his collegiate career.
He led the Cougars to a second-place finish at the Border Olympics behind No. 13 Baylor. It was the Cougars' fourth top-3 team finish in seven team events this season.
He became the third member of the current Houston team to earn medalist honors during his career, joining senior All-American Roman Robledo and senior Kyle Pilgrim.
His opening-round 67 tied his career, first set in the Northern Intercollegiate First Round on Sept. 6, 2013. Hamilton went on to post a career-low through 36 holes and tied his 54-hole best at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Sept. 23-24, 2013.
With his performance, he moved into second among the Cougars with a 72.85 scoring average, eight rounds of par or better and two rounds in the 60s.
This was the first time in his career that Hamilton has collected a conference weekly award.
