ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Houston women's basketball team lost a double-digit second-half lead and rallied back in the final minute to top UCF by a score of 71-68, Thursday night at UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars won their seventh-consecutive Conference USA game to remain unbeaten in league play.
Houston (16-4, 7-0) appeared to be headed for its first loss in C-USA action as the Knights (11-9, 4-3) held a 3-point lead and were traveling to the free-throw line with 55.3 seconds remaining in the contest. UCF's Aisha Patrick missed both free-throws, however, and Lesslee Mason converted two free-throws on the other end to cut the deficit to one with 44.0 seconds left.
After a missed UCF jumper, Courtney Taylor came down with the rebound and was fouled in the process, knocking down both crucial free-throws to give the Cougars a one-point lead with 24.0 seconds remaining. The Knights missed another jumper on the offensive end and Lesslee Mason grabbed the board and handed it off to Brittney Scott, who hit both shots from the charity stripe as Houston escaped with the win.
The Cougars held a four-point lead at the half and outscored the Knights by an 8-2 margin out of the intermission to extend their lead to double digits at 10 for the first time.
With Houston leading by eight, Jasmine Johnson converted a layup in traffic and Roxana Button dialed up a deep 3-point bucket to extend the Cougar lead to 50-37 with 11:41 remaining.
The Knights answered with an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to five with less than nine minutes to play, and finally tied the contest with 2:17 remaining.
UCF's Ashia Kelly then nailed a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Knights their first lead of the second half with only 1:30 left.
Porsche Landry led the four Houston double-digit scorers with 17 points off a 6-of-11 shooting effort from the field and 5-of-6 clip from the charity stripe.
Lesslee Mason registered her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to go with three blocks and two assists. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
Taylor also turned in a double-double performance with 10 points and 12 boards in 36 minutes. Taylor's late free-throws pushed her double-double count to 13 for the season and 53 in her storied career.
Brittney Scott rounded out the double-figure performers with 14 points, three assists and three steals in 35 minutes of action. Scott was 4-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
