HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team overcame a six-point deficit with only 38 seconds remaining to knock off SMU by a score of 72-67, Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars won their eighth-straight contest to remain unbeaten in Conference USA action.
With Houston (17-4, 8-0) trailing 67-61 with 38 seconds remaining, Brittney Scott broke a 1-for-8 Houston shooting slump from long-range in the second half to cut the deficit to three with 27 seconds left to play.
After SMU's Alisha Filmore missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free-throw line, Scott drained another 3-point bucket to knot the game at 67 with 15 seconds left. Lesslee Mason then stole the inbounds pass and dished to a driving Brittany Mason, who was fouled under the basket.
Mason, who had missed both free-throw attempts one minute earlier, bounced back to knock down both attempts and put the Cougars up by two with 12 seconds remaining.
The Mustangs (10-10, 3-4) turned the inbounds pass over once again, and Scott hit one of two free-throws to give the Cougars a three-point cushion. Porsche Landry then forced the third-consecutive turnover on an inbounds pass and knocked down both free-throws with seven seconds remaining to ice the contest.
All five Houston starters scored in doubles figures, led by Landry's 16-point effort. The Houston native handed out three assists, tied a career high with five steals and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Scott just missed her first-career double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Scott snagged a career-high five offensive rebounds and tied her career best with nine total boards.
Courtney Taylor notched her 14th double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor, who posted eight points and 10 boards in the second half, was 6-of-13 from the field and tallied two assists, two steals and a block.
Brittany Mason set a new career best with 14 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. The LaPorte, Texas, native was 5-of-13 from the field and knocked down a career-high two 3-pointers.
Lesslee Mason rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points and seven boards, while tying a career high with five first-half blocks. Mason also handed out three dimes and swiped three steals in 33 minutes of play.
The Cougars charged out of the gate, taking an 11-0 lead in the first four minutes. Houston was leading 24-12 when SMU relied on a 14-2 run while holding the Cougars without a field goal for over eight minutes to tie the contest at 26-26.
SMU took its first lead of the contest at the 15:21 mark of the second half, but the Cougars roared back with a 14-4 run to take a 50-41 lead.
The Mustangs then nailed three 3-point buckets in four possessions to spark an 11-0 run and take back the lead with less than nine minutes remaining.
Brittany Mason launched her second three of the game to knot the contest at 56 points apiece with 4:40 remaining, but the Mustangs outscored Houston 11-5 over a four-minute span to stretch their lead to six.
The Cougars outrebounded SMU by a 31-13 margin in the second half to win the overall battle, 51-38. Houston forced 20 turnovers on 13 steals and swatted eight shots.
Houston shot 34 percent (25-of-73) from the field, 27 percent (6-of-22) from 3-point range and 73 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line, while a hot-shooting SMU squad was 43 percent (26-of-61) from the field and 60 percent (6-of-10) from downtown.
