Cougar Golf Team Wins Kansas Invitational

Lawrence, Kan. - Senior Jordan Irwin won the individual championship and junior transfer Ben Moser finished in fifth place to lead the University of Houston men's golf team to win the 2007 Kansas Invitational and post their first tournament victory in the 2006-07 season.
Irwin shot a 1-under-par score of 71 and finished the tournament with a three-round combined 1-under-par score of 215 on the par 72, 7092-yard course at the Alvamar Golf Club. Irwin was the individual leader after the first two rounds of the tournament after he recorded his best round of the season in the second round with a 2-under-par 70.
Irwin won the individual title after finishing in second place at last year's tournament. He finished two shots ahead of Cole Howard of North Texas. Austin Hannah of Oral Roberts and Cleveland State's Kent Monas tied for third place with scores of 218.
Moser also recorded the first Top-10 finish of his collegiate career with a fifth-place showing after he shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round. A junior transfer from Kent State, Moser finished the tournament at 3-over-par with a score of 219. He had climbed into fifth place during the second round when he also fired a two-under-par 70 after shooting 4-over-par in the first round.
Juniors Steven Frazier and Brady Shivers both shot 2-over-par scores of 74 in the third round. Frazier finished the tournament tied for 27th with a three-round total of 226, and Shivers tied for 58th place with a combined score of 232.
Houston won its seventh team championship under head coach Vince Jarrett after the Cougars fired back-to-back team scores of 292. UH entered the final round six strokes back of defending champion Kansas, who finished in a second-place tie with Oral Roberts on its home course.
The Cougars finished with a team score of 888 and won the tournament by six strokes over Kansas and Oral Roberts. Kansas State finished in fourth-place with a team score of 898.
Houston won the Kansas Invitational after finishing in fourth place as a team at both the 2005 and 2006 Kansas Invitational.
