HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team knocked off a Big 12 team for the first time since 2000 with its 2-0 win over Baylor, Sunday at the Carl Lewis Track & Field Complex.
UH's last Big 12 win came over Texas in a 3-2 OT battle on Sept. 3, 2000.
The Cougars (2-0) has won consecutive games to open the season for the first time in the program's nine-year history. It was also UH's first win over Baylor (1-1) in three tries.
"I thought it was an exciting match," head coach Bill Solberg said. "We scored early and forced them to press a little bit. We fixed some things tactically this morning and our defenders played well. We scored two goals and got the shutout, I think it was great. I don't care if these keep going down to the wire as long as we get the win."
Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) knocked in her second goal of the weekend in the ninth minute as she drove a cross from Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) into the back of the net past BU keeper Ashely Holder.
Mundy had a role in the second goal as well. The senior All-America candidate was fouled inside the box in the 85th minute, setting up a penalty kick for Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS).
Gaines, who hit the game-winner in overtime on Friday, again found the back of the net, beating Holder for her second tally of the young season.
Holder took the loss for the Bears, making two saves. Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) notched her second-career win, and earned her first-ever shutout. She made four saves on the day and moved her record to 2-0.
UH's defense in front of Scott was solid all afternoon, giving up one corner kick. All of Scott's saves came in the opening 45 minutes, as BU only mustered four shots in the second half. The teams tied with 13 shots apiece.
The Cougars are back in action Thursday at 7 p.m. CST, taking on North Texas in Denton. Houston closes out the weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge, La. to take on LSU Sunday at 1 p.m.
