DENTON, Texas - The University of Houston soccer team took its first loss of the season, a 2-1 overtime decision to North Texas, Thursday at the North Texas Soccer Field.
UNT's Kristen Campbell scored the game-winning goal 91 seconds into the extra period, helping the Mean Green (2-0) continue a 15-match unbeaten streak at home.
Campbell received the ball from Kelli Lunsford and knocked it past goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS), who made a career-high six saves, but took the loss for UH. The Cougars are 1-6-1 all time against North Texas, with an 0-4 mark in Denton.
Houston (2-1) took the lead in the 38th minute as freshman Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) headed home a corner kick from Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) for her third tally of the season. Mundy has assisted on all three of Godbolt's goals this year.
UH's offense mustered only five shots and one corner kick in the second half. The Cougars were outshot by a 17-13 margin for the match. Kandice Ellis earned the with for North Texas, making three saves in the match.
North Texas' Kendall Juett got in behind the UH defense and scored from the top of the box in the 68th minute, tying things up at one apiece. Neither team could muster the go-ahead goal in regulation, sending the game to extra time.
The match was a physical one, especially in the second half. UH finished with 19 fouls, 11 of which came in the second 45 minutes.
Houston closes out the weekend with a trip to Baton Rouge, La. to take on LSU Sunday at 1 p.m.
