HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore Jordan Irwin was honored as the Conference USA Diver of the Week after winning medalist honors at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and helping lead the Cougars to a share of their fourth consecutive team championship.
Irwin won the individual championship at that tournament for the second straight season after firing an even-par 71 in the final round and finishing 54 holes at 1-under-par 212. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native was the only golfer to shoot under par for the tournament and finished three strokes ahead of his closest competitor.
In addition, he helped guide the Cougars to a tie for the team championship at that tournament for the second straight season. It was Houston's fourth straight team title to open the 2006 spring season, the longest such streak since the 1984-85 team won its first five tournaments of the fall campaign.
Irwin joins teammates Ricky Romano and Pablo Acuna as Cougars to have received the league's weekly award.
He and his Cougar teammates return to action this weekend as they compete at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, beginning Friday and running through Saturday.
