SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The University of Houston golf team stood in 12th place Friday after the first two rounds at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.
After shooting an even-par 288 as a team in the morning session on the 7,027-yard, par-72 course at the Karsten Course, UH fired a 5-under-par 283 in the afternoon session for their final standing at the end of the first day.
The final 18 holes will be played Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. (CST).
Senior John Wine led the way for the Cougars, shooting 1-under-par 71 in both rounds to tie for 31st place at 142. Brett Callas and Daniel Angenscheidt rallied from tough first rounds to shoot 2-under-par 70 in the second 18 holes. Callas was tied for 39th, while Angenscheidt was tied for 48th.
Kevin Newman stood in a tie for 71st place at 146, while Denton Walker was tied for 83rd at 148.
Host Arizona State stood in first place in the team standings with a score of 25-under-par 551. Pepperdine was in second place at 557 while TCU and USC tied for third at 559. Arizona (560), BYU (563), Oklahoma (564), Stanford (565), Texas (566) and San Diego State (567) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
TCU's David Schultz stood atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under-par 134.
This weekend's tournament will be the final tune-up for the Cougars before the Conference USA Championships on April 21-23 in Tampa, Fla.
