Swimming & Diving Tops the Competition at Phill Hansel Invitational

Cougars land two first-place finishes to win the meet
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team topped the leaderboard after three days of competition at the annual Phill Hansel Invitational on Friday evening at CWRC Natatorium.
The Cougars dominated the meet leading all three days of the competition. Houston ended the meet with 1463 points followed by Rice (1185), Air Force (886), Nevada (828), Florida Gulf Coast (750), Colorado State (727.5), Tulane (714.5), New Mexico State (571), San Jose State (431), Vanderbilt (356.5) and New Mexico (265).
Senior Virag Peter scored the first-place finish in the swimming events with a time of 2:10.92 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time qualified her for a NCAA cut in the event.
Junior diver Michelle McLeod earned the victory on the platform with a score of 294.20. Sophomore Caroline Roelen landed in second with her score, securing a zone cut in the event (265.10).
Sophomore Alexia Duncan and junior Elizabeth Jimenez touched the wall in second and third in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:55.30 and 1:55.73, respectively. Duncan's time was a personal best as she landed in third place on Houston's top 10 list.
Junior Sydney Nethercutt and redshirt senior Alondra Ortiz also raced side-by-side in the 200-yard butterfly. Nethercutt finished in second (1:57.23) with Ortiz right behind in third (1:57.59).
Senior Liya Goupil placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 49.51. With this time, Goupil moved up to fourth place on the top 10 list.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Goupil, sophomore Sienna Bruner, junior Evelyn Entrekin and Jimenez fought hard until the final seconds, landing a second-place finish with a time of 3:19.20.
UP NEXT
Houston will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday, Dec. 6, to face the Jayhawks at the Robinson Natatorium.
The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
