
PREVIEW: Cross Country Opens 2024 Season at UIW Twilight on Friday

Women set to compete at 8:50 p.m., men at 9:15 p.m. in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Houston Cross Country team opens its 2024 season on the road at the UIW Twilight, hosted by Incarnate Word on Friday at the Classic Elite Soccer Complex. The women's 4000m race begins at 8:50 p.m., followed by the men's 6000m at approximately 9:15 p.m.
Houston will compete against Incarnate Word (host), Baylor, Houston Christian, Our Lady of the Lake, Texas State, Trinity and UTRGV.
Houston welcomes a total of 21 freshmen with 13 on the women's squad and eight on the men's side. In addition to the freshmen, the Cougars welcome two sophomore transfers, Carley Thornton and Grant Sims.
The men enter the season ranked 10th in the South Central Region of the USTFCCCA Coaches Preseason Poll and look to continue building the momentum throughout the 2024 season.
At the 2023 South Central Regional, Houston recorded its best finish since 2019, finishing 11th in a 25-team field.
The Cougars return seven on the men's side with Michael Archie, Branch Cox, Miles Cox, Aaron Crittenden, Benym Fantue, Patrick Flowers and Derek Waite.
Branch Cox led the Cougars in the final three meets of the 2024 season, including setting back-to-back personal best times at the 8k distance and then again at the 10-kilometer distance at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.
On the women's side, Houston returns seniors Eleni Kaiser and Erin Rivera along with sophomore Carly Ahrens. During the 2023 season, Kaiser and Rivera competed in all five meets while Ahrens appeared in four.
