
Branch Cox Wins Men’s 6K, Men Place Second at UIW Twilight

Eight freshmen score in Houston’s season opener
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Fifth-year Branch Cox recorded his first collegiate cross country victory in the men's 6k race to lead the Houston men's team to a second-place overall finish and freshman Cadence Patterson placed second in the women's 4k at the UIW Twilight on Friday evening.
Cox recorded his first career victory as he crossed the finish line at 18:06.9, nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up Jared Laverty (Incarnate Word, 18:12.7). Junior Miles Cox finished in third at 18:13.8.
The Cox brothers were followed by freshman Caden Thurman (Eighth place, 18.21.8), sophomores Aaron Crittenden (13th place, 18.33.1), Michael Archie (14th place, 18:41.1), Patrick Flowers (18th place, 18:48.1) and Grant Sims (25th, 18:54.8).
On the women's side, Patterson made her collegiate debut in second place in the four-kilometer race in 13:53.9. Freshman Lily Campos finished fifth overall in 14:19.6 to help the women to a third-place finish.
The Houston freshmen continued to shine as AnnClaire Cop (19th place, 14:42.4), Daniela Mendez (24th place, 14:50.2), Julia Shimel (26th, 14:53.7), Grace MacDonald (28th, 14:58.1) and Emily Pharris (30th, 15:03.6) rounded out Houston's scoring seven.

The Cougars will resume 2024 action on Friday, Sept. 13, at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
The men will open the day with the 8k at 8 a.m., followed by the women's 5k at 8:45 a.m.
