Women's Basketball Falls in Big 12 Road Finale

PROVO, Utah – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program dropped its final road game of the regular season to BYU, 64-54, inside the Marriott Center on Wednesday evening.
On the boards, Houston (13-15, 4-13 Big 12) outrebounded BYU (16-14, 6-11 Big 12), 40-38, with senior forward Peyton McFarland leading Houston with eight, followed by graduate guard N'Yah Boyd with seven.
Houston went a perfect 15-of-15 from the charity stripe, as it shot 100% for the first time since going 10-of-10 against Tulsa on Jan. 8, 2022.
Senior guard Laila Blair led Houston with 18 points while BYU's Lauren Gustin posted a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds.
BYU opened the game on a 10-0 run, spearheaded by guard Kailey Woolston's eight points. Houston's first points came at the 6:10 mark as junior forward Maliyah Johnson made a driving layup. Four different Cougars scored in the opening frame, led by Johnson's five points.
Houston made all nine of its free throws in the second frame, but it wasn't enough as BYU entered the locker room with the 32-25 advantage.
Down by seven, Houston opened the third quarter with an 8-3 run led by Blair with four and two apiece by senior forward Kamryn Jones and Johnson to cut BYU's lead down to two. After a back-and-forth battle between both teams, BYU closed out the quarter with the 47-41 lead.
BYU opened up the quarter with its second 10-0 run to lead by as many as 16 points. Houston attempted to claw its way back into the game with five minutes remaining as Boyd drained a stepback jump shot, but BYU's early advantage sealed the match for the Cougars.

Houston will close out regular season action at 7 p.m., Saturday against UCF for Senior Night where it will honor its eight seniors, Shalexxus Aaron, Laila Blair, N'Yah Boyd, Amari Conn, Kamryn Jones, Britney Onyeje, Bria Patterson and Ash'a Thompson.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a special pregame ceremony beginning at 6:40 p.m.
The Cougars await final seeding arrangements for the Big 12 Championship at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., which begins Thursday, March 7.
