Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season Action with Win Over UCF

Senior guard Laila Blair and redshirt senior Shalexxus Aaron shine on senior night with 15 points each
HOUSTON – Graduate guard N'Yah Boyd knocked down a 3-pointer in the game's final minutes to give the University of Houston Women's Basketball program a 68-67 Senior Night victory against UCF inside Fertitta Center on Saturday night.
Houston (14-15, 5-13 Big 12) guards Shalexxus Aaron and Laila Blair shined on senior night as they posted 15 points each. UCF (12-16, 3-15 Big 12) was led in scoring by Kaitlin Peterson with 34 points.
It was a back-and-forth battle to start the game, but a 9-0 run led by redshirt sophomore forward Logyn McNeil and Aaron gave Houston its first lead of the evening. UCF quickly fought back, but Houston escaped the quarter with a 14-13 lead.
The Cougars shined on both ends of the court in the second quarter. Defensively, Houston recorded three steals and forced four turnovers while Aaron led the pack on offense with eight points to end the half, 33-27.
Houston opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run led by senior forward Peyton McFarland with six points. The Cougars used a pair of 6-0 runs to stretch their lead to 21 points. UCF ended the third quarter on an 8-0 run, including five free throws to get within 13.
UCF cut down Houston's lead to four points on a 12-2 run as Peterson scored 11 of her 17 points during the final quarter. A 3-pointer by Mya Burns tied the game, 58-58. The Knights managed to grasp a five-point lead, but a 3-pointer by Blair cut down the deficit to two. Boyd played the late-game heroine as she drained a 3-pointer with 1:18 on the clock to seal the win for the Cougars.
