FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program dropped a hard-fought road game, 59-49, against TCU at Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Saturday evening.
Houston (13-14, 4-12 Big 12) held an early 7-3 lead thanks to a 3-pointer from junior Maliyah Johnson and five steals. TCU (18-9, 5-11 Big 12) responded, scoring the next nine points to close the quarter.
The Cougars' first field goal of the second period came as senior forward Kamryn Jones connected on a three-point play with three and a half minutes left to play in the first half. Senior guard N'Yah Boyd scored five-straight points, including a 3-pointer, to draw Houston within 12 to close the second quarter.
After the Horned Frogs scored the first two points out of the break, the Cougars responded with four-straight layups to put the deficit back to 12. Senior guard Britney Onyeje knocked down four free throws to hold the deficit heading into the final frame.
Senior guard Laila Blair scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter. Blair and Boyd sparked a 7-0 run to bring the Cougars within seven, their smallest deficit of the night.
In the second half, the Cougars outscored the Horned Frogs, 32-26, including 20 points in the final frame, but it would not be enough to secure the season sweep over TCU.
