STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program picked up its first Big 12 Conference road victory as it defeated Oklahoma State, 65-57, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Houston (13-12, 4-10 Big 12) proved why it leads the conference in bench points as it outscored Oklahoma State's bench, 37-8. Graduate guard N'Yah Boyd recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and zero turnovers, while redshirt senior Shalexxus Aaron (4-of-8) and graduate guard Britney Onyeje (3-of-8) recorded seven of the Cougars' 11 3-pointers coming off the bench.
Oklahoma State (12-13, 3-9 Big 12) took an early 11-2 lead in the first frame, but an 8-0 Houston run cut the deficit down to two. A pair of free throws and a late driving layup by Stailee Heard extended Oklahoma State's lead, 15-11.
An early 3-pointer by Aaron in the second cut the Cowgirls' lead to one, but Oklahoma State quickly answered to extend its lead by as many as eight. Both teams battled it out in the final minutes, leaving the Cougars and Cowgirls squared at 26 to end the half.
The third quarter continued to be a battle for both teams, but a three-point play by Boyd with 1:12 remaining gave Houston a lead they would not relinquish.
Houston gained some separation in the fourth quarter as it went 4-of-8 from the three-point line. Senior guard Laila Blair led the charge with two 3-pointers, while junior forward Maliyah Johnson and Boyd recorded one each to seal the road victory for the Cougars.
