
Cullen Breaks Record as Swimming & Diving Falls to #20 Texas A&M

Fresh off Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, Cullen shines again, breaks Houston’s 100-yard backstroke record
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Houston Swimming & Diving freshman Lottie Cullen broke Houston's 100-yard backstroke record while the team earned 16 podiums and four NCAA B-Cuts as the Cougars dropped its first dual meet of the season to #20 Texas A&M, 200-100, on Thursday at Rec Center Natatorium.
Cullen headlined the day for Houston, tying the program record in the 100-yard backstroke with a 52.47 as the leadoff in the second place 400-yard medley relay. Cullen then fully broke the record with a 52.29 three events later. The time also earned the freshman a B-Cut, the first of her career. Cullen also claimed the seventh fastest time in team history in the 200-yard backstroke, placing third in the event with a 1:58.07.
Joining Cullen in the 400 medley relay was senior Henrietta Fangli, junior Noor El Gendy and junior Liya Goupil. Together, they touched the wall in 3:35.29 for second place, which also ranks as the sixth fastest time in the country this season.
Sophomore Elizabeth Jimenez also claimed a Top 10 Time in the 100 back with her leadoff in the 400 medley relay, moving up to ninth on Houston's all-time list with a 54.62.
Fangli and sophomore Evelyn Entrekin both claimed NCAA B-Cuts in the 100-yard breaststroke while also taking the top two spots in the event. Fangli placed first with a 1:00.33 while Entrekin touched the wall in 1:00.86 for second place.
Junior Virag Peter earned a B-Cut standard with a 2:11.60 in the 200-yard breaststroke, a time which also earned the Pécs, Hungary, native a first-place showing.
Sophomore Sydney Nethercutt moved into Houston's all-time Top 10 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, placing second in the event with a time of 10:04.55, the 10th best time in program history.
Senior Adelaide Meuter placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:00.01 while Goupil placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 50.90.
Freshman Mariana Cote led a pair of podiums for the Cougars in the 500-yard freestyle. Cote placed second with a 4:58.02 with Nethercutt taking third just behind her with a 4:58.88. Sophomore Nora Hetyei finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:03.23.
Closing out swimming events, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Goupil, senior Mary Catherine Jurica, freshman Sienna Bruner and freshman Alexandra Curcan took second with a 3:25.06. Jimenez, Cullen, freshman Regina Torres Pomar and junior Jenna Kerkman also claimed a podium spot, placing third with a 3:27.46.
In diving, sophomore Michelle McLeod placed third in the 3-meter with a score of 290.55 while fifth-year Emilia Waters took third in the 1-meter with a score of 262.65.

Houston returns to the CRWC Natatorium on Nov. 2 for a tri-meet against #13 LSU and Tulane. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
