
Swimming & Diving Falls to #11 Texas A&M

Cougars claim 18 podiums, including three first-place finishes, in first meet of 2024
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team came up short in its first dual meet of 2024, falling 187.5-106.5 to #11 Texas A&M at the CRWC Natatorium on Thursday.Â

Houston claimed 18 podium finishes in 16 events, including a relay and two individual event wins.Â
Â
Fifth-year Chase Farris continued a successful campaign in her last year of eligibility. After clinching a third-place finish in the 3-meter with a 316.50, she completed the day with a second-place showing in the 1-meter with a 275.78.Â

The Cougars swept the podium in the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomore Alondra Ortiz claimed first in the event with a 4:27.08 followed by freshman Sydney Nethercutt in second (4:28.09) and sophomore Landry Hadder in third (4:30.40).Â

Junior Henrietta Fangli captured the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking first with a 1:03.19. Freshman Evelyn Entrekin took third in the same event with a 1:04.46.

Houston's A-Relay of sophomore Liya Goupil, junior Mary Catherine Jurica, senior Anna Ervin and freshman Elizabeth Jimenez cruised to a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:27.54. The Cougars swept the podium in the event as the B-Relay (freshman Evelyn Entrekin, junior Adelaide Meuter, freshman Megan Unruh and sophomore Noor El Gendy) finished second with a 3:31.52 and the C-Relay (Fangli, junior Abbie Alvarez, senior Danielle Titus and sophomore Jenna Kerkman) finished third with a 3:33.95.Â

Ortiz also earned another podium by taking second (2:01.56) in the 200-yard butterfly while Jurica also earned a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 23.91. Closing out Houston's second-place tallies, Goupil swam a 51.49 in the 100-yard freestyle, and Ervin finished with a 56.15 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Houston's A-Relay took third in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet, as Jimenez, Fangli, Alvarez and Goupil swam a 1:43.65.Â

Sophomore Eden Humphrey captured a pair of third-place finishes with a 4:56.53 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 10:05.64 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.Â

Entrekin took third in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:04.46 while Goupil claimed the same spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:51.72.

Also claiming bronze finishes in their events were Jurica in the 100 free (51.92), Titus in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.58) and Alvarez in the 100 fly (56.22).Â

The Cougars remain at the CRWC Natatorium for a tri-meet against Rice and Miami (Fla.) on Jan. 26. Admission is free with the meet beginning at 1:30 p.m.
