Cougars pick up first win at Rice since 2001
HOUSTON– Sophomore forward Cameryn Maddox led the University of Houston Soccer program to a 2-1 victory against crosstown rival Rice on Thursday evening at Holloway Field.
Houston (4-0-1) earned its first victory at Rice (2-3) for the first time since 2001 when the Cougars defeated the Owls, 2-1 (Sept. 4, 2001).
Rice found its lone goal of the evening as Ellen Halseth gave the Owls the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
The Cougars trailed for nearly 23 minutes until Maddox broke past two defenders to score the equalizer in the 41st minute off an assist from freshman Kyrsten Kizer.
For a second consecutive match, Maddox opened the second half with a goal in the 49th minute for her fifth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore defender Jada Gibson, who drove down the field to earn her first career assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Dietrich returned in net for Houston, posting a career-high eight saves to earn the victory for the Cougars.
