
Five Cougars on CSC Softball Academic All-District Team

Softball tallied five student-athletes earning the honor from College Sport Communicators
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team had five student-athletes earn a spot on the College Sport Communicators Academic All-District team, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The 2022-23 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced June 6.
Graduate student Kati Ray Brown, sophomore LA Matthews, senior Mattie Boyd, sophomore Baylea Myers and senior Paige Hulsey all earned a spot on the Academic All-District team, each earning their first honor from CSC.
Brown, a four-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic team honoree, graduated in spring 2022 with a bachelor's degree in Retailing and Consumer Science. She's currently working toward a master's degree in Global Retailing. Brown appeared in 25 of Houston's game this season, hitting a home run and throwing out four runners attempting to steal.
Matthews, a redshirt sophomore athletically but a senior academically, is working toward a bachelor's degree in liberal studies. A 2021-22 selection on The American's All-Academic Team, Matthews played in 39 games this season for the Cougars, tallying 30 hits and 15 RBIs.
Boyd is graduating this spring with a bachelor's degree in sociology and earned a spot on the 2021-22 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. She tallied 14 appearances and seven starts in the circle for Houston in 2023, tallying 24.1 innings pitched while striking out 16, helping combine for a shutout against Tarleton State on March 12.
Myers, a sophomore studying human development in family studies who also was a honoree on The American's 2021-22 All-Academic Team. Myers played in 28 games for Houston this year, posting seven hits and three RBIs while making 10 starts in the field.
Hulsey is graduating this fall with a degree in Technology, Leadership and Innovation Management and is a three-time honoree on the American Athletic All-Academic Team. Hulsey started all 50 games in center field for Houston this year and posted the third-highest batting average on the team. She scored 28 runs, while also swiping six bases for the Cougars in 2023.
