Cougars ink third Division I transfer this spring with former four-star recruit McFarland’s signature
HOUSTON – Head coach Ronald Hughey has been active in the transfer portal, signing his second Division I transfer of the day with Peyton McFarland inking a financial aid agreement with the Houston women's basketball team on Tuesday.
McFarland, a 6-4 forward from Boise, Idaho, played three seasons at Utah averaging 4.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in in 59 total games for the Utes. The forward helped Utah to a share of
the 2022-23 Pac-12 regular season title with a 15-3 conference record, its first since joining the league.
McFarland scored in double figures nine different times with a career-high 17-point game against Washington in 2021-22. The forward played in two of the team's 2023 NCAA Tournament games, playing a total of eight minutes against Garnder-Webb and eventual champion LSU.
The forward posted one double-double in each of her first two seasons in Salt Lake City, Utah, before playing just 77 minutes as a junior this past season.
The Idaho native averages 51.2 percent from the field and 64.0 percent from the free throw line.
The former four-star ESPN Top 100 recruit's best season came in 2021-22 as a sophomore where she averaged 6.7 points per game, 4.3 rebounds a game, 55.8 percent from the field and 71.9 percent from the charity stripe.
As a prep star, McFarland was the Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year, an ESPN four-star recruit, ranked as the 80th recruit in the 2019 class in ESPN's Top 100 rankings. McFarland was a two-time All-State selection and four-time All-Southern Idaho Conference selection while leading her Boise High School team to the state tournament as a junior and senior.
Head Coach Ronald Hughey has now signed four transfers this spring after he signed Maliyah Johnson from Pittsburg in March and Djessira Diawara and N'yah Boyd in April.
