Houston adds Power 5 transfer with scoring prowess
HOUSTON – Houston women's basketball head coach Ronald Hughey announced the signing of transfer Maliyah Johnson from Pittsburgh on Friday after the sophomore averaged 8.5 points per game and 25.4 minutes per game for the Panthers in the ACC.
A 6-0 forward from Columbus, Ohio, Johnson joins the Cougars with two years of eligibility remaining after appearing in 57 total games for Pitt. Johnson started 26 of the 30 games she played in during the 2022-23 season and was one of five players to appear in all 30 games Pitt played while shooting 38.0 percent from the field this past season.
The Columbus, Ohio native scored in double figures 13 times in 2022-23 including a career-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting against Bryant. Johnson made 30.8 percent of her three-point attempts during the year for Pitt and made 86.2 percent of her charity stripe attempts.
During conference play in the ACC this year, Johnson was Pitt's third-highest scorer and made the second-most three-pointers during the 18-game conference slate.
In her prep career, Johnson was a four-year player for Africentric Early College in Columbus, Ohio under head coach William McKinney where she finished off her senior season averaging a career-high 18.5 points and 12.0 rebounds while leading her squad to an 11-3 overall record, claiming the school's sixth straight Division III district championship. Johnson was named First Team All-City, First Team All-Central District and Third Team All-Ohio during her strong senior campaign and helped her squad collect Ohio State Championships in 2018 and 2019.
