McFarland Scores 21, Women’s Basketball Defeats Florida A&M

Cougars close homestand with 79-59 victory against Rattlers
HOUSTON – A pair of Cougars set career marks as the University of Houston Women's Basketball program defeated Florida A&M, 79-59, inside Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
Senior forward Peyton McFarland tallied 21 points to set a new career high. Redshirt sophomore forward Logyn McNeil also logged a career-high eight points and six rebounds in 13 minutes of work.
Houston (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) grabbed 51 rebounds and recorded 25 points off second-chance opportunities. Florida A&M (1-6, 0-0 SWAC) posted 30 rebounds, a new season opponent low for the Cougars.
The Cougars forced 24 Florida A&M turnovers on 10 steals and converted 22 points off those turnovers.
It was back-and-forth early in the first quarter, but Houston took the lead as McFarland and senior guard Laila Blair recorded seven points each in the opening frame. The Cougars were 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the first quarter.
Houston pulled away with 10 points to open the second quarter. The Cougars held the Rattlers scoreless until the 4:48 mark, only allowing nine points in the quarter. It was the third time this season holding an opponent to single digits in a quarter.
McFarland imposed her will as she scored four of Houston's seven field goals in the third quarter. The Cougars gained a 26-point lead heading into the final frame.
Florida A&M attempted to sneak back into the game; however, Houston never relinquished its 20-point lead to secure its fifth victory through its six-game homestand.
NOTES
Houston will set out on its first road trip of the season as it takes on Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m., Friday in Commerce, Texas.
The Cougars will return to the friendly confines of Fertitta Center as they take on Texas Southern on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m., for Education Day.
