Houston Rolls to Tuesday Win Against Texas Southern

Johnson, Jones and Blair score in double figures against Tigers
HOUSTON – In front of 3,658 fans for education day, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program took down Texas Southern, 89-42, inside Fertitta Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday's crowd marked the second-highest attended Houston women's basketball game at Fertitta Center and the fifth largest in program history.
Houston (7-1) bested the Tigers (1-6) thanks to the Cougars' 50.8% shooting percentage from the field and holding Texas Southern to 30.4%.
Three Cougars scored in double figures as junior forward Maliyah Johnson led the team with 16 points, followed by 11 points from senior forward Kamryn Jones and senior guard Laila Blair with 10.
Houston began the game scoring the first seven points behind a 3-pointer from graduate forward Bria Patterson and back-to-back layups from Jones.
The Cougars poured on 20 points in the second period for a 41-19 lead at the break. The 41 points in the first half marked the fifth time this season Houston scored 40 or more points in the first half.
Houston went on a 19-0 run in the fourth quarter that lasted over five minutes. Over the run, senior guard Amari Conn scored her first points on the season with a floater off the window, finishing the game with six points.
Texas Southern would only score seven more points over the last 2:19 of the game, giving Houston a 47-point victory, its largest margin of victory on the season.
NOTES
The Cougars will embark on a two-game road swing as it faces UTSA at 6 p.m., Thursday, followed by a trip to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State at 4 p.m. CT, Sunday.
Houston then will return to Fertitta Center as it welcomes Rice on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. for its final non-conference game of the season.
Following the conclusion of non-conference action, the Cougars will open Big 12 Conference play as they face Texas Tech on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m., inside Fertitta Center.
