Three-hit shutout and hot bats lead Cougars to first home conference win of the seeason
HOUSTON − Stellar pitching and blazing bats in the early-going powered Houston to a 8-0 shutout victory in the opener of a three-game home series over conference rivals Memphis.
Right-handed pitcher Hannah Todd picked up her fifth win, second shutout and third complete game of the season as she tossed 5.0 innings while only giving up three hits and one walk.
The Cougars' (18-16-1, 2-1-1 American) defensive efforts jumped out from the first pitch as the infield converted a conference-leading 17th double play to head to the bottom of the first. Houston opened the scoring in the bottom half as center fielder Aspen Howie hit a two-run moonshot to put the Cougars on the board at 2-0.
A Tigers (13-21, 1-3 American) throwing error at shortstop bailed out the Cougars and kept them in the batter's box. The bottom of the second spelled trouble for the Tigers as Houston capitalized with base hits on three consecutive at-bats down the order by left fielder Amanda Carden, shortstop Rock Benavides and second baseman Becca Schulte. Two doubles and three RBIs later, catcher Kati Ray Brown capped off the bottom of the second with a three-run blast to left field to stretch the gap to 8-0.
Scoreless third and fourth innings kept the run column frozen on both sides leading up to the top of the fifth inning.
Todd remained solid in the circle with no hits in the final inning as the Cougars held on to win via run rule. Houston now improves to 4-1 in games when hitting a home run in the first inning this season.
The shutout victory puts head coach Kristin Vesely one win shy of 100 victories in Cougar Softball Stadium.
