Paige Hulsey’s three hits help Houston walk off Memphis in 10 innings
HOUSTON – Right fielder Paige Hulsey beat out a two-out infield single in the 10th inning as the Houston softball team downed Memphis 5-4 on Saturday afternoon from Cougar Softball Stadium.
Hulsey's third hit of the day drove in catcher Kati Ray Brown to secure Houston's (19-16-1, 3-1-1 American) first conference series of 2022. Brown led off the 10th with a single to right field. Hulsey also doubled in the game.
Memphis (13-22, 1-4 American) scored its first run of the series on four hits in the first inning. Houston answered by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half.
Two walks, an error and a base knock by the Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning.
Houston starter Kenna Wilkey went 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and left in a tie ballgame.
The two teams traded solo home runs in the sixth inning after a quiet middle portion of the game. Center fielder Aspen Howie tied the game in the sixth with her second home run in as many games and seventh of the season.
The Cougars had what looked like the perfect recipe for a walk-off in the seventh inning courtesy of back-to-back one out singles by right fielder Paige Hulsey and left fielder Amanda Carden, to put runners on the corners. The Tigers escaped the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
Memphis retook the lead in the ninth inning on a pair of singles.
Down to their final three outs in the ninth, Baylea Myers drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on back-to-back passed balls.
A ground ball off the bat of Carden and a delayed break for home by Myers looked like an out at home, but an evasive dive into the plate tied the game at 4-4.
Houston utilized relievers Hannah Blincoe and Hannah Todd to keep the Tigers' bats quiet. Blincoe twirled 3.0 innings with a strikeout and allowed just one run on one hit. Todd entered and pitched the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th innings, allowing just one run on three hits on the way to her sixth win of the season.
The win marked head coach Kristin Vesely's 100th win inside Cougar Softball Stadium.
