Conference Home Opener Pits Cougars, Tigers

HOUSTON − The University of Houston softball team opens home conference play with a three-game series against Memphis Friday-Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.

FIRST PITCH

The Cougars host the Tigers for the first time since 2018. Houston went to Memphis in 2021 and 2019. Neither team played a conference game in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Becca Schulte and Kati Ray Brown each hit two home runs against Tulsa March 26 - the second-straight season in which two Cougars hit two home runs in the same game.
Rock Benavides has reached base in 13 consecutive games.
The Cougars hit a season-high five home runs against Tulsa on March 26.
Houston tied a game for the second time ever when it tied Tulsa 2-2 on March 27 (last in 2010).
Freshman Baylea Myers hit a team-leading .455 over the five games March 22-27, with a double and RBI.
Head Coach Kristin Vesely needs two wins in Cougar Softball Stadium to eclipse the 100-win mark at home.
Houston downed #7 Washington in walk-off fashion on Friday of the Boyd Gaming Classic, 5-4. It marked the second-straight year the Cougars had topped the #7 team in the country (last against #7 Oklahoma State in 2021).
Becca Schulte hit a home run in the final game of 2020, did not play in 2021, and hit a home run in her first at-bat of 2022. Thus, Schulte hit a home run in back-to-back games spanning 23 months.
Freshman Ja'Naiya Thomas was named to D1Softball's preseason Top 75 Impact Freshman list and as the publication's Preseason Freshman of the Year for The American.
Graduate student Becca Schulte is competing in her seventh season as a collegiate athlete. Schulte graduated high school in 2015. She is one of two known seventh-year softball players in the DI ranks.
Houston will face four Preseason Top 25 teams in 2022, including three teams in the Top 10 of D1Softball's preseason poll.
The Cougars play 10 teams that made a regional in 2021 and seven Power 5 opponents in 2022, facing those seven teams a total of 11 total times.

LAST TIME OUT

Houston tied its series at Tulsa, taking the second game 15-13 in which 31 hits were recorded.
The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in 8.5 innings on Sunday.
Three different UH hitters hit .500 in the series.
