Six-time American Champions set to compete Thursday
HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program will open its season at 1 p.m., Thursday against Texas A&M at the Rec Center Natatorium in College Station. With Head Coach Tanica Jamison entering her second season, the Cougars anticipate a high-performing final season in the American Athletic Conference.
"We are excited to start out season on Thursday. Every dual meet is an opportunity for the coaches to see where we are in our training and give our student-athletes opportunities to practice their race strategies," Jamison said. "It's also an opportunity for us to see the freshman compete for their first time as Cougars. There's a lot of excitement going into the meet."
NEW FACES
Abi Carroll, Gigi Casten, Athina Economon, Noor El Gendy, Landry Hadder, Eden Humphrey, Jenna Kerkman, Alondra Ortiz and Virag Peter are the nine new additions to the team this season. The newcomers are highly decorated from high school as they prepare to make their collegiate debuts.
SIX TIME CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS
While the nine newcomers garner excitement and attention, the Cougars return 14 swimmers and eight divers from their 2021-22 roster. Seven student-athletes who earned 2021-22 CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors are returning, as well as other team veterans that lead the Cougars to their sixth consecutive American Athletic Conference Championships title in February 2022.
● Senior Chase Farris won the 3-Meter title and finished third in the 1-Meter and Platform at The American Championships. Farris also represented the Cougars at the 2022 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships competing in the Platform diving event.
● Junior Abby Jackson won the 200-butterfly to give the Cougars a six-point advantage at The American Championships.
● Sophomore Henrietta Fangli completed her debut season with a first-place finish in the 100-breast at the American Championships.
● Sophomore Adelaide Meuter won the 100-Yard Butterfly at the American Championships, including setting a new top program record (53.50) in the event.
UP NEXT
From Oct. 14-15, Houston will split its squad with swimmers heading across town for the Rice Fall Splash, while the divers host Idaho, Incarnate Word and North Texas at the Houston Diving Invitational at the CRWC Natatorium with action beginning at 10 a.m., each day.
