Cougar senior is first UH Swimmer to score at meet since 2009
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program closed out its first day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships with its first points since the 2014 championships.
Senior swimmer Ioanna Sacha was the highlight of the day for the Cougars, winning her heat of the 200 Individual Medley to advance to the final. Sacha shattered the program record in the event, which she set only weeks ago at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championships when she touched in at 1:56.79. In the B-Final, Sacha finished in eighth place at 1:57.92 as one of only two swimmers from non-major conference programs to advance.
Sacha is the first Cougars since Taylor Olanski in 2014 to score at the NCAA Championships and the first swimmer since Sasha Schwendenwein in 2009 to score.
In the 50 Free, Mykenzie Leehy closed out the day with a 43rd-place finish in the prelims with a time of 22.64.
Live championship coverage will air on ESPN3 for preliminary and finals sessions Wednesday through Saturday. ESPNU will air a two-hour show at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, April 6. Live results can be found by clicking HERE. Prelims are set to begin at 9 a.m. each day, followed by finals at 5 p.m.
