Cougars fall late to Knights
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Basketball team fell short to -/RV UCF (5-1, 3-0 American) in a 55-46 decision on Sunday afternoon in Orlando.
Nine Cougars scored in the loss led by a nine-point effort from Eryka Sidney. Sidney knocked down three three-pointers and is 8-of-10 from long-range over the past two games. Julia Blackshell-Fair paced UH on the boards with seven rebounds, as Dymond Gladney led the Cougars in assists with three.
Houston (5-2, 2-1 American) held UCF to 22.9 percent shooting from three-point range. The Cougar reserves outscored UCF's bench 15-7.
The game proved to be a battle from the start. The Cougars were hot from the three-point line in the first quarter, knocking down three of its six attempts from long-range. UCF held the advantage in the post, outscoring UH 10-2 down low. Houston escaped the first quarter with a 13-11 lead.
Both teams turned things up on the defensive end in the second quarter, but rebounds and second-chance points would separate the two. Houston outscored UCF 5-0 off second chances and outrebounded the Knights 12-7. Six of the Cougars 10 second quarter points came from behind-the-arc as Gladney and Sidney each went a perfect 1-of-1 from the three-point line. UCF trips to the foul line kept things close, as the Knights hit 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. Cougars headed into the locker room with a slight advantage, leading UCF 23-19.
Turnovers plagued the Cougars in the third frame. UCF found a rhythm and shot 54.5 percent from the field to ultimately take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, both teams battled down the stretch. Timely shots and trips to the free throw line separated created a deficit that the Cougars couldn't overcome. UH was outscored 9-17 in the final frame, ultimately dropping its first conference games of the season.
