Cougars look to secure fifth straight win over Green Wave
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team returns to action on Jan. 6 against Tulane inside the Fertitta Center. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Cougars are 5-2 overall this season, including a 2-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play.
THE 4-1-1
Houston returns home for an American Athletic Conference matchup with Tulane. The Cougars are led in scoring by Britney Onyeje who averages 13.4 points per game. Bria Patterson leads UH on the glass, pulling down 6.6 rebounds per game. Julia Blackshell-Fair is the assists leader for the Cougars with 32 this season.
Houston is averaging 70.7 points per game on 39.3 percent shooting from the field and a 34.0 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 68.0 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 39.8 percent and 21.1 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game with 74 steals this season and 30 blocks, forcing 21.71 turnovers per game.

Tulane is in its 27th season under Head Coach Lisa Stockton. The Green Wave is 5-3 this season and 1-2 in conference play. The team most recently defeated Memphis in an 80-44 decision on Jan. 2. Tulane is led in scoring by Jerkaila Jordan who averages 15.6 points per game. Krystal Freeman averages 9.9 rebounds per game to lead the team in the category. Jordan is also the assist leader for Tulane with 26 assists this season. Tulane average 71.6 points per game on 42.5 percent shooting from the field, including a 29.8 percent mark from the the three-point line.

Wednesday's meeting is the 45th meeting between the two teams. Houston trails the series 17-28. Houston has won the last four contests.

The Cougars have shown that they are not afraid to shoot three-pointers and on the flipside they are one of the best at defending the three-point shot. UH ranks second in the league and 4th nationally in three-point FG defense, holding opponents to 21.1 percent from long-range.

Houston forced 30 Memphis turnovers, its most since Feb. 18, 2020 when the team forced 23 against Cincinnati. This season UH has earned 74 steals and is averaging 10.6 steals per game. Houston is 39th in the NCAA in steals per game and second in the league. When it comes to forcing turnovers, Houston is one of the best, averaging 21.70 forced turnovers per game the Cougars are 19th in the NCAA and leads The American in the category.
