Houston Opens 2021 With ESPNU Match-Up Against -/RV UCF

Cougars look to extend four-game winning streak in Orlando
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Basketball team will open the 2021 calendar year in Orlando when it takes on -/RV UCF.
Tip-off is slated for 11 a.m. CT at the Addition Financial Arena. The game will be the Cougars only game of the season on linear television, airing on ESPNU.
THE 4-1-1
Houston continues its American Athletic Conference campaign when it starts the New Year by traveling to Orlando where it will face UCF. The Cougars are led in scoring by Britney Onyeje who averages 15.5 points per game. Bria Patterson leads UH on the glass, pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game. Julia Blackshell-Fair is the assists leader for the Cougars with 32 this season.
Houston is averaging 74.8 points per game on 40.3 percent shooting from the field and a 34.0 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 70.1 points on defense while letting opponents shoot 39.9 percent and 21.0 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Under Coach Hughey, Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons. The Cougars enter the game with 64 steals this season and 26 blocks, forcing 21.50 turnovers per game.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
UCF is in its 5th season under Head Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson. The Knights are 5-1 this season and have not played since Dec. 19 when they defeated Tulsa in a 53-42 decision. UCF is led in scoring by Courtajia Sanders who averages 12.0 points per game. Destiny Thomas averages 6.3 rebounds per game to lead the team in the category. Diamond Battles is the assist leader for UCF with 21 assists this season. The Knights averages 58.8 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting from the field, including a 42.5 percent mark from the the three-point line.
THE SERIES
Sunday's meeting is the 21st meeting between the two teams. Houston trails the series 6-16. Houston has dropped the seven contests.
BOMBS AWAY
Houston has proven itself to be a threat from behind the three-point line, racking up at least six made three's in every game this season. Onyeje leads The American in made three-pointers this season with 16. The Cougars are 28th nationally and lead The American in made three-point field goals per game. Against Wichita State. Eryka Sidney went a perfect 5-of-5 from the three-point line, setting a single-game record in The American for three-point shooting percentage.
BALL MOVEMENT
The Cougars recorded 100 possessions against OU, committed just 12 turnovers. The Cougars love to move the ball, racking up 20 assists against Memphis. UH is ranked 84th in the NCAA and second in the league with 15.3 assists per game.
H-TOWN LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
The Cougars have shown that they are not afraid to shoot three-pointers and on the flip side they are one of the best at defending the three-point shot. UH ranks second in the league and 8th nationally in three-point FG defense, holding opponents to 21.0 percent from long-range.
SCOOP 'N SCORE
Houston forced 30 Memphis turnovers, its most since Feb. 18, 2020 when the team forced 23 against Cincinnati. This season UH has earned 64 steals and is averaging 10.7 steals per game. Houston is 36th in the NCAA in steals per game and second in the league. When it comes to forcing turnovers, Houston is one of the best, averaging 21.50 forced turnovers per game the Cougars are 24th in the NCAA and second in The American in the category.
DEEPER THAN EVER
With is largest roster in recent years, Houston has more than enough options off the bench. The Houston reserves have done their part, accounting for 138 points this season.

Houston's leading scorer Britney Onyeje is a transfer from UCF. She joined the Cougars during the 2018-19 season, sitting out the 2019-20 season due to NCAA tansfer rules.
