Cougars Even Series with 3-1 Win

Three-run fourth inning leads to victory over No. 25 Arizona
HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team evened the series against No. 25 Arizona with a 3-1 victory on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field.
The Cougars improved to 5-8, while Arizona dropped to 9-5. The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. CT.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Arizona took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
4th | The Cougars plated three runs in the fourth to grab the lead. After a Ryan Hernandez double and a walk by Steven Rivas put two aboard, Brad Burckel's RBI double tied the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Rivas and Burckel came around to score on Kobe Hyland's two-RBI single to right field that put Houston up 3-1.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Arizona outhit the Cougars, 11-7.
• Junior Ryan Hernandez doubled and scored a run, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.
• Senior Brad Burckel was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.
• Senior Kobe Hyland recorded a two-RBI single and finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
• Junior Kyle Lovelace and sophomore Derrick Cherry each added one hit apiece.
Pitching:
• Senior left-hander Clay Aguilar (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits. The senior recorded two strikeouts and walked five on 96 pitches.
• Senior right-hander Carter Henry logged one shutout inning of relief work, surrendering one hit and recording one strikeout.
• Cherry picked up his second save of the season, tossing the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run. He struck out two and gave up two hits on 25 pitches.
• UH's pitching staff did not allow a run after the first inning as Arizona stranded 13 baserunners.
